As a Boston wedding photographer, I believe a well-curated wedding gallery should include a mix of color and black and white wedding photos. While color images capture the vibrancy of your day, black and white wedding photography brings a level of depth & emotion that allows you to be able to remember exactly how you felt in that moment.
Whether it’s a dramatic embrace, a teary-eyed exchange of vows, or a quiet moment between the couple, these images strip away distractions and highlight pure emotion. A black and white image, to me, captures a moment in a way that a color image cannot. It’s also why I do not just take every color photo and create a black and white copy – not all color images will work in black and white.
Most of the time, I know when I am taking the photo that it’s going to be a black and white image. There is a certain type of light and contrast that inspires me and is needed to create a dynamic black and white image. As I work my way through your gallery, I carefully select additional images that benefit from this classic style—moments with strong expressions, interesting lighting, or artistic composition. This ensures that your gallery is not only beautiful but also thoughtfully balanced between color and black and white wedding photos.
For couples, black and white wedding photos provide a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. While editing trends change, these images remain classic, making them perfect for framing or featuring in a wedding album. Additionally, black and white edits can enhance emotional storytelling, allowing the most heartfelt moments to shine without distraction.
When you receive your wedding gallery, you’ll find that black and white wedding photography adds depth and elegance to your collection. It’s more than just a stylistic choice—it’s a way to preserve the raw emotion of your wedding day in its purest form.
Some of the most powerful black and white wedding photos happen in the in-between moments—those fleeting, unscripted interactions that capture the true essence of your day. Here are a few tips to help create an environment that encourages these moments:
